A spambot is a piece of software written for filling out forms to benefit the spambot author. Often leaving comments that contain links which might help their website’s SEO (Search Engine Optimization) when a website form is submitted.

One common security step was to include a math question (i.e. 2+5=7) in the website form. However, some spambot authors have determined how to identity and engage the math problem on a website form so they can provide the answer and thus have their form comments submitted.

Some experiences spam authors can also get around image captchas which are also commonly used for form security on a website.
